Songs of Vasistha

The "Songs of Vasistha" were inspired by the teachings and stories in the ancient Sanskrit text, Vasistha's Yoga. Called the "crest-jewel" of all works on Vedanta, the Yoga Vasistha is also considered the earliest work reflecting the highest wisdom of Vedanta, or jnana yoga. It is the instruction of the Sage Vasistha to his pupil, Sri Rama, as recorded by the poet Valmiki in some 62,000 lines. This instruction led Rama to realization of the Self.

In more recent times the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, J. Krishnamurti and Sri Nisargadatta have emerged from the same well as the teachings of Vasistha. Two contemporary direct path teachers are Adyashanti (www.adyashanti.org) and Nirmala (www.endless-satsang.com). Another is Eckhart Tolle.

It is hoped that this music will be a form of satsang with Vasistha in this modern world; a touch of grace for all jnana yogis, advaita vedantists, and seekers of the Self. The lyrics to the songs are presented here. There is also a glossary of some of the words used that may be unfamiliar to westerners, and a note on available translations of the Sanskrit text.
